Warming in the Tasman Sea a global warming hot spot

Monday, January 30, 2012

Oceanographers have identified a series of ocean hotspots around the world generated by strengthening wind systems that have driven oceanic currents, including the East Australian Current, polewards beyond their known boundaries.

The hotspots have formed alongside ocean currents that wash the east coast of the major continents and their warming proceeds at a rate far exceeding the average rate of ocean surface warming, according to an international science team whose work is published in the journal Nature Climate Change today.

Paper co-author, CSIRO's Dr Wenju Cai, said that while the finding has local ecological implications in the region surrounding the hotspots, the major influence is upon the ocean's ability to take up heat and carbon from the atmosphere.

In Australia's case, scientists report intensifying east-west winds at high latitudes (45?-55?S) pushing southward and speeding up the gyre or swirl of currents circulating in the South Pacific, extending from South America to the Australian coast. The resulting changes in ocean circulation patterns have pushed the East Australian Current around 350 kilometres further south, with temperatures east of Tasmania as much as two degrees warmer than they were 60 years ago. "We would expect natural change in the oceans over decades or centuries but change with such elevated sea surface temperatures in a growing number of locations and in a synchronised manner was definitely not expected," said CSIRO's Dr Wenju Cai.

"Detecting these changes has been hindered by limited observations but with a combination of multi-national ocean watch systems and computer simulations we have been able to reconstruct an ocean history in which warming over the past century is 2-3 times faster than the global average ocean warming rate," says Dr Cai, a climate scientist at CSIRO's Wealth from Oceans Research Flagship.

The changes are characterised by a combination of currents pushing nearer to the polar regions and intensify with systematic changes of wind over both hemispheres, attributed to increasing greenhouse gases.

Dr Cai said the increase of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has been the major driver of the surface warming of the Earth over the 20th century. This is projected to continue.

He said the research points to the need for a long-term monitoring network of the western boundary currents. In March next year, Australian scientists plan to deploy a series of moored ocean sensors across the East Australian Current to observe change season-to-season and year-to-year.

Penguins: Crosby dealing with neck injury (AP)

PITTSBURGH ? Sidney Crosby isn't just dealing with the lingering effects of a concussion. A California doctor says the Pittsburgh Penguins' star also is recovering from a neck injury.

Crosby visited with neurological spine specialist Dr. Robert S. Bray in Los Angeles this week as he continues treatment for symptoms that resurfaced during a loss to Boston on Dec. 5.

While Crosby initially said he didn't sustain a concussion against the Bruins, the team says Bray diagnosed Crosby with one and also discovered an unspecified neck injury, though Bray told the team the neck injury is "fully healed."

Crosby missed more than 10 months after sustaining head shots in consecutive games in early January 2011. He returned on Nov. 21 and had 12 points in eight games before the symptoms resurfaced following a physical game against the Bruins.

The team said Bray's findings will be evaluated by independent specialists.

General manager Ray Shero said at the All-Star game in Ottawa that Crosby had returned from California and that he was "optimistic" Crosby will play again this season.

"He's back in Pittsburgh now, hopefully we'll see next week where he is and we'll get the reports from California and compare notes to what's been done so far," Shero said.

The Canadian web site sportsnet.ca, citing unidentified sources, reported Crosby visited with a doctor in Utah, where an MRI revealed an abnormality in two vertebrae in Crosby's neck.

Crosby's agent, Pat Brisson, did not immediately return a request for comment from The Associated Press.

The 24-year-old Crosby acknowledged earlier this month he was still experiencing headaches and motion problems. He traveled to Atlanta recently to visit with Dr. Ted Carrick, a chiropractic neurologist who successfully treated Crosby last summer.

Crosby has been cleared for light exercise and skated with his teammates during a road trip through Florida two weeks ago.

The Penguins entered the All-Star break on a seven-game winning streak. Pittsburgh returns to practice Monday and will host Toronto on Tuesday night.

The team has stressed Crosby will not play until he is ready.

"The thing with Sidney is we want to continue to look to see how we can get this under control and manageable so he can return to play," Shero said. "As I said before he's not (playing) until those symptoms resolve but hopefully have him back at some point here soon."

Body clock receptor linked to diabetes in new genetic study

ScienceDaily (Jan. 29, 2012) ? A study recently published in Nature Genetics has found new evidence for a link between the body clock hormone melatonin and type 2 diabetes. The study found that people who carry rare genetic mutations in the receptor for melatonin have a much higher risk of type 2 diabetes.

The findings should help scientists to more accurately assess personal diabetes risk and could lead to the development of personalised treatments.

Previous research has found that people who work night shifts have a higher risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Studies have also found that if volunteers have their sleep disrupted repeatedly for three days, they temporarily develop symptoms of diabetes.

The body's sleep-wake cycle is controlled by the hormone melatonin, which has effects including drowsiness and lowering body temperature. In 2008, a genetic study led by Imperial College London discovered that people with common variations in the gene for MT2, a receptor for melatonin, have a slightly higher risk of type 2 diabetes.

The new study reveals that carrying any of four rare mutations in the MT2 gene increases a person's risk of developing type 2 diabetes six times. The release of insulin, which regulates blood sugar levels, is known to be regulated by melatonin. The researchers suggest that mutations in the MT2 gene may disrupt the link between the body clock and insulin release, leading to abnormal control of blood sugar.

Professor Philippe Froguel, from the School of Public Health at Imperial College London, who led the study, said: "Blood sugar control is one of the many processes regulated by the body's biological clock. This study adds to our understanding of how the gene that carries the blueprint for a key component in the clock can influence people's risk of diabetes.

"We found very rare variants of the MT2 gene that have a much larger effect than more common variants discovered before. Although each mutation is rare, they are common in the sense that everyone has a lot of very rare mutations in their DNA. Cataloguing these mutations will enable us to much more accurately assess a person's risk of disease based on their genetics."

In the study, the Imperial team and their collaborators at several institutions in the UK and France examined the MT2 gene in 7,632 people to look for more unusual variants that have a bigger effect on disease risk. They found 40 variants associated with type 2 diabetes, four of which were very rare and rendered the receptor completely incapable of responding to melatonin. The scientists then confirmed the link with these four variants in an additional sample of 11,854 people.

Professor Froguel and his team analysed each mutation by testing what effect they have on the MT2 receptor in human cells in the lab. The mutations that completely prevented the receptor from working proved to have a very big effect on diabetes risk, suggesting that there is a direct link between MT2 and the disease.

The research was funded by the Wellcome Trust, the National Institute for Health Research and the Medical Research Council in the UK and the Agence National de la Recherche, the Contrat de Projets Etat-R?gion Nord-Pas-De-Calais, the Soci?t? Francophone du Diab?te, the Fondation Recherche M?dicale and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in France.

Searching for roleplay partners

I'm looking for Rp partners, because so far all of the good rp's I've seen are either too crowded, too far along, inactive, or never started. If someone could point me in the right direction, that would be helpful ^^.

I do lot's of Rp's, nearly anything you're up to, with a few exceptions. I'm literate, but not used to forum's, since I role played on iScribble for the last two or three years. I haven't counted word for word my posts, but I'm guessing I could do 200-400 words? 400 on a good day... or I might be way off and it's like 100-300. (but... 100 seems pretty short.) I'm literate, and hate one liners. I just might virtually slap you. No word substitutes 'U, r, da,' ew, hate those so much. I'm not a Grammar Nazi though, if you forget commas or have a run on sentence or don't list actions properly i'm not going to get mad, as long as I understand what you're saying. anyways, back to what I'm looking for.

What I will rp with you: (In order of epicness)
Fantasy
Demons
Angels
Vampires
Witches
Werewolves
Creatures
High School
Shonen-ai/Yaoi/Yuri/GAY STUFFS
Romance
Horror
Circus
Action? Apocalypse
Animals
Warriors (Not a favorite, but I'll do it)
Fantasy Animals
Asylum Rp's
Lab Testing
Anime based- (Probably Romance)
-Black Butler/Kuroshitsuji
-Soul Eater
-Ouran High School Host Club
-Inuyasha (It's been awhile so, meh)
-Naruto (Don't really like the show anymore, but I loved season 1)
-High School Of the Dead
-Vampire Knight
-Pokemon
-Jounju Romantica
-Hey Class President (I DON'T CARE IF THERE'S ONLY 2 EPISODES)
-Hellsing OVA

I'm not really a fan of...
Movie/Video game based rp's
Fan based rp's (Except I'm okay with specifically Anime... it's kind of weird how that works)
Dragons
Undeveloped Characters. You may not think your character isn't very developed, but trust me when I tell you it is. I hate one line descriptions and two word personalities. I hate even more undeveloped depressing characters. I'm ALL FOR developed depressing characters, but if your character is a Mary-sue of a horrible past with cliche add-on's then no, it might not work.
Example:
Sam. Long blonde hair and blue eyes.
She's quiet and shy.
When she was 5 her parents were murdered and she became an orphan. She's suicidal and cuts her wrists.

Great, now my character is going to feel bad for your character in the beginning, because I know you're going to make it apparent and obvious and tell him right away.

So.... develop your characters please.

Btw, I don't think I can PM people yet. You could help me out with that though.

Connecticut killer sentenced to die for "unimaginable horror" (Reuters)

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut (Reuters) ? A judge ordered Joshua Komisarjevsky to be executed this summer for the 2007 murders of a mother and her two daughters during a brutal home invasion in Connecticut, saying on Friday that he committed a crime of "unimaginable horror."

Judge Jon Blue told Komisarjevsky, 31, that he alone was to blame for his new address on death row after the triple murders of Jennifer Hawke-Petit, 48, and her daughters Hayley Petit, 17, and Michaela Petit, 11, and beating of husband and father Dr. William Petit Jr.

"This is a terrible sentence but one you have written for yourself," Blue told Komisarjevsky in New Haven Superior Court.

"Your crime was one of unimaginable horror and sadness," the judge said. "Your fate is now in the hands of others. May God have mercy on your soul."

He set an execution date of July 20 pending an appeal, which could drag out the matter for years.

Before the judge spoke, Komisarjevsky, dressed in an orange jumpsuit, denied he killed or raped anyone and blamed "the hurt I caused" on being a victim himself of sex abuse as a child, drug addiction, and his accomplice Steven Hayes, 48, already sentenced to death row.

Hawke-Petit was strangled and the girls died of smoke inhalation after the home was set afire. Hawke-Petit was raped and Michaela Petit was sexually assaulted.

Dr. Petit, who had been tied up and beaten unconscious, escaped as the home went up in flames.

"I did not rape, not that that excuses what I did do," Komisarjevsky told the judge in a monotone voice.

"I did not strangle Mrs. Petit. I did not pour the gas or light that fire. I did not want them to die. My personal feelings about their deaths are just that, personal. When will the killing end?"

He told the judge, "The clock is now ticking and I owe a debt I cannot repay."

The killer's portrayal of innocence was in stark contrast to the "evil" described by the sole survivor of the attack, Dr. Petit, who told the court how Komisarjevsky's actions had destroyed his family.

"July 23, 2007, was my own personal holocaust," Petit said. "Evil does live among us."

He said he missed his late night chats with his wife and their partnership raising their daughters, who he will never walk down the wedding aisle and who will never bear the grandchildren he would have loved to have known.

Outside the courthouse, Petit's father spoke of the slow emotional recovery of his son, who is now engaged to be married.

"He's starting to come back a little bit now to what he was. He never will come all the way back," William Petit Sr. told reporters after the sentencing.

"To know Bill, the brilliant young doctor that he was, the happy young man, the good father, brother, cousin, uncle, all of those things, and son, and then to see him after this is just heartbreaking."

Christopher Komisarjevsky, the killer's uncle, said outside court that he had "no doubt" his nephew committed the crimes he is sentenced to die for.

He likened the violence to "an earthquake where the Petit and the Hawke families are at the epicenter. At that center point of impact, the horror and sadness are beyond comprehension and beyond description."

A jury convicted Komisarjevsky last fall, then said he deserved the death penalty as his punishment.

Komisarjevsky targeted Hawke-Petit and her younger daughter at a grocery store and later went with Hayes to their home as the family slept, police said he confessed to investigators. He bashed Petit with a baseball bat, tied him up and ransacked the home.

The two men then tied the girls to their beds and concocted a plan to take Hawke-Petit to the bank to withdraw $15,000.

Despite his last-minute denial at the sentencing, Komisarjevsky admitted to investigators he molested Michaela while her mother was at the bank, according to police.

With the police circling the home, Hayes raped and strangled Hawke-Petit and the two men doused the home with gasoline.

Police caught Komisarjevsky and Hayes as they tried to flee.

Komisarjevsky's sentencing brought to 11 the number of men on the Connecticut's death row, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.

Connecticut has executed only one person, in 2005, since the death penalty was reinstated in the United States in 1976, the center said.

Healthy Pets, Healthy People

Pets can sometimes be reservoirs of diseases that infect humans.?Most viruses and organisms that cause illness are species specific, or specially adapted to the host they infect.?When a disease is able to make the leap from our pet to us, it is referred to as zoonotic.

The most important historical zoonotic disease is the Plague that ravaged Europe in the 1300?s killing tens of millions of people. Primarily a disease of rats and wild rodents, the Plague is transmitted from animal to animal by the bites of infected fleas, with humans as the accidental host when the rat dies and the fleas look for a warmer host.

Today, the number of potential zoonotic diseases is impressive. Let?s look at some of the more common dog and cat diseases that may pose a threat to humans.

Dogs and cats can transmit:

Rabies
Rabies is caused by a virus that attacks the nervous system and is almost always fatal to humans. It is the most well known of? zoonotic diseases. It is usually transmitted via the saliva as a result of a bite from an infected animal. Infected pets may act fearful or agitated and show excessive salivation, difficulty swallowing, lack of coordination, and paralysis. Symptoms are similar in infected humans. Thanks to mandated vaccination strategies, rabies cases in domestic dogs and cats are rare.

Lyme Disease, (primarily canine)
Caused by the rickettsial organism, Borrelia burgdorferi, it is transmitted to people and dogs by the bite of ticks, most commonly the black-legged deer tick. The first symptom in people, which appears a few days to a week after exposure, is usually a red, bulls-eye shaped rash and may be accompanied by fever, headache, fatigue, and muscle aches; the disease can progress and cause swollen and painful joints, meningitis, and heart problems when untreated. Effective tick control is the best prevention of this disease.

Sarcoptic mange - scabies
An intensely itchy skin disease caused by a Sarcoptes scabei mite, this microscopic mite burrows into the skin and releases allergens and toxins into the skin. Dogs, cats and humans all have a similar condition known as scabies. The mites are different for each host, but the condition is highly contagious among all. The Sarcoptes scabei mite causes dogs to lose fur and creates severe itching.? Mites from animals may get on people and cause severe itchiness or temporary lesions for a few days, but will not actually cause a scabies infection. If both you and your pet have intense itching and a rash seek medical attention immediately.

Ringworm
Technically called dermatophytosis ringworm is a skin condition that can be transmitted between people and pets and is caused by one of several kinds of microscopic fungal organisms, not actually a worm. The name ?ringworm? comes from the common symptom in people - the appearance of a reddish ring on the skin, which was once thought to be caused by a worm. People and pets may be exposed to the spores of the fungus by contact with other people, pets, or soil. In people, the disease is called tinea, characterized by a ring-like marking on the skin and lesions on the skin or on the scalp. Your physician may prescribe a topical ointment to treat the infection.

Hookworms
The eggs of these parasitic nematode worms are found in dog and cat feces. In humans, the larvae of these worms can penetrate the surface of the skin (usually through bare feet) and migrate through the skin creating wormlike burrows visible underneath the skin and causing a red, intensely itching eruption known as cutaneous larval migrans or ?creeping eruptions?. In severe cases, the larvae may enter deeper tissues, which can cause lung disease and painful muscles. All dogs and cats should have regular annual stool exams to check for hookworms.? Most heartworm prevention medications control hookworm infections in dogs and cats.

Roundworms
This is a very common intestinal parasite that can infect dogs, cats, and people. Adult roundworms live in the intestines and pass eggs which exit the body in the stool. These eggs can persist in the environment for at least a month before microscopic larvae begin to form inside the eggs. People, especially children, are at risk and are infected through accidental ingestion of soil contaminated with roundworm larvae. Infection is usually mild or undetected, but can cause permanent damage if the larvae migrate through the eyes and organs resulting in ocular or visceral larval migrans. While rare, ocular larval migrans can lead to blindness. Again, regular stool examinations are recommended to ensure that pets are not infected with roundworms.

Toxoplasmosis (feline)
Cats are considered the main host for the parasite, but more often people are exposed when they eat undercooked meat or unwashed vegetables. It is less common for a cat to be a source of infection, but they can be. Cats get the organism by hunting outdoors and eating other infected animals. A person can be infected if they garden in soil in which cats have defecated because the organism can be longlived in that environment. The organism does not cause any symptoms at all in most people, except those who are immunosuppressed where it may cause encephalitis. In women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, it can result in miscarriage, congenital brain disorders, or congenital eye disorders.

These are just a few of the zoonotic diseases which may be shared between pets and humans. It is very important to note that cats and dogs may not always show symptoms of these diseases. Pets with signs of any of these conditions should be seen by the veterinarian, tested, and treated. Your veterinarian can advise you of potential public health risks associated with these diseases and recommend when medical attention may be needed.? Appropriate vaccination protocols, parasite screening, and preventive medicine are key to reducing exposure to these preventable diseases. PurinaCare Pet Health Insurance Plus Preventive Care covers the vaccinations needed to protect your pet and you from these and other potentially harmful diseases.

Justin Bieber Fans Prepping Charity Single In His Honor

President/CEO of Together We Rise talks to MTV News about song, slated for March release.

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a>'s fans are working to give back the same way the pop star readily does. Several of Bieber's biggest fan groups, as well as the nonprofit Together We Rise and Brush Buddies (the makers behind the singing Bieber toothbrush), have all teamed up to work on a charity single. "They're all working on pieces of the video and the lyrics. Right now, they're putting together videos and thank-you's.' We're working on the back end," Danny Mendoza, President/CEO of Together We Rise, which focuses on helping foster children in the U.S, told MTV News about the project. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:712657" width="240" height="211"></div><p> "It started with a young lady named Vivian, she runs the Justin Crew fan club and she approached it on Twitter. She approached it and she had a lot of fan support," he continued. "She took it upon herself to take a leadership role, and then she contacted me because she needed some guidance. We just decided we'll help you do it. Justin Bieber had tweeted about us in the past and helped us get some recognition, so it was a thank-you to him as well. Proceeds from the song will go toward <a href="/news/articles/1673555/justin-bieber-believe-charity-drive.jhtml">Bieber's <i>Believe</i> charity drive</a>. It will drop in March, just in time for his 18th birthday on March 1. "I'm almost 100 percent positive that they know," Mendoza said of Bieber's camp's knowledge of the project. "Justin Bieber inspired a lot of young people to give back. It's a thank-you for helping us and we want to give back in your honor." Bieber is certainly not a newbie to the world of charity. Mendoza said that having a pop star like Bieber being so socially conscious has been incredible for the charities he helps bring attention to. "He definitely has the right people around him ... Japan's first trade deficit since 1980 (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Japan first annual trade deficit in more than 30 years calls into question how much longer the country can rely on exports to help finance a huge public debt without having to turn to fickle foreign investors.

The aftermath of the March earthquake raised fuel import costs while slowing global growth and the yen's strength hit exports, data released on Wednesday showed, swinging the 2011 trade balance into deficit.

Few analysts expect Japan to immediately run a deficit in the current account, which includes trade and returns on the country's huge portfolio of investments abroad. A steady inflow of profits and capital gains from overseas still outweighs the trade deficit.

But the trade figures underscore a broader trend of Japan's declining global competitive edge and a rapidly ageing population, compounding the immediate problem of increased reliance on fuel imports due to the loss of nuclear power.

Only four of the country's 54 nuclear power reactors are running due to public safety fears following the March disaster.

"What it means is that the time when Japan runs out of savings -- 'Sayonara net creditor country' -- that point is coming closer," said Jesper Koll, head of equities research at JPMorgan in Japan.

"It means Japan becomes dependent on global savings to fund its deficit and either the currency weakens or interest rates rise."

That prospect could give added impetus to Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's push to double Japan's 5 percent sales tax in two stages by October 2015 to fund the bulging social security costs of a fast-ageing society.

The biggest opposition party, although agreeing with the need for a higher levy, is threatening to block legislation in parliament's upper house in hopes of forcing a general election.

Japan logged a trade deficit of 2.49 trillion yen ($32 billion) for 2011, Ministry of Finance data showed, the first annual deficit since 1980, after the economy was hit by the shock of rising oil prices.

Were Japan to run a current account deficit, it would spell trouble because it would mean the country cannot finance its huge public debt -- already twice the size of its $5 trillion economy -- without overseas funds.

Japanese investors currently hold about 95 percent of Japan's government bonds, which lends some stability to an otherwise unsustainable debt burden.

Domestic buyers are less likely to dump debt at the first whiff of economic trouble, unlike foreign investors, as Europe's debt crisis has shown.

The trade data helped send the yen to a one-month low against the dollar and the euro on Wednesday.

"HOLLOWING OUT," AGEING POPULATION

Total exports shrank 2.7 percent last year while imports surged 12.0 percent, reflecting reduced earnings from goods and services and higher spending on crude and fuel oil. Annual imports of liquefied natural gas hit a record high.

In a sign of the continuing pain from slowing global growth, exports fell 8.0 percent in December from a year earlier, roughly matching a median market forecast for a 7.9 percent drop, due partly to weak shipments of electronics parts.

Imports rose 8.1 percent in December from a year earlier, in line with a 8.0 percent annual gain expected, bringing the trade balance to a deficit of 205.1 billion yen, against 139.7 billion yen expected. It marked the third straight month of deficits.

Japan managed to sustain annual trade surpluses through the Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s and the post-Lehman Brothers global recession that started in late 2008, which makes the 2011 dip into deficit all the more dramatic.

A generation ago, Japan was the world's export juggernaut, churning out a stream of innovative products from the likes of Sony and Toyota.

Much like China today, Japan's bulging trade surplus became a source of friction with the United States and other advanced economies, who pressed Tokyo to allow the yen to rise more rapidly in order to reduce the imbalance.

A 1985 agreement between Japan, the United States and Europe's big economies -- known as the Plaza Accord after the New York hotel where it was signed -- pushed the yen higher against the U.S. dollar.

Many economists argue that sowed the seeds of Japan's current debt woes. After the Plaza Accord, Japan's economy weakened and its central bank slashed interest rates, which contributed to a credit boom that eventually spawned a financial crisis and led to two decades of economic stagnation.

Bank of Japan Governor Masaaki Shirakawa said on Tuesday he did not expect trade deficits to become a pattern, and did not foresee the country's current account balance tipping into the red in the near future.

But Japan's days of logging huge trade surpluses may be over as it relies more on fuel imports and manufacturers move production offshore to cope with rising costs and a strong yen, a trend that may weaken the Japanese currency longer term.

A fast-ageing population also means a growing number of elderly Japanese will be running down their savings.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura said the government wants to closely watch the trend of exports and imports.

"There are worries that the yen's strength is driving Japanese industry to go abroad," said Fujimura. "We have to create new industries ... implement comprehensive steps to boost growth. It is important to secure employment within the nation."

Dropped heart successfully transplanted in Mexico

A heart that was dropped on the ground while being transported to a hospital has been successfully transplanted into a 28-year-old hair stylist.

However Dr. Jaime Saldivar said Erika Hernandez doesn't yet know that her new heart made national news when a medic stumbled and the plastic-wrapped heart tumbled out of a cooler onto the street two weeks ago.

Saldivar said it would be up to the family to tell her.

A rosy-cheeked Hernandez spoke briefly with reporters on Tuesday and thanked the donor's family, saying "I have no words to express what I'm feeling right now."

Hernandez was born with a congenital heart defect. She received the heart of a man who died in a car accident.

The heart was taken from Guanajuato state to Mexico city, a distance of 280 miles, traveling in an ambulance, then a plane, and then a helicopter, according to The Guardian newspaper. The nation's media followed every step of the journey.

'Rapid, precision maneuver'
Mexico City police had described the operation to deliver the heart as a "rapid, precision maneuver."

Everything appeared to be going smoothly as traffic was stopped to allow the helicopter to land near the hospital.

However, after leaving the helicopter one of the two medics wheeling the cooler that contained the plastic-wrapped heart stumbled.

The lid of the cooler came off and the heart fell out onto the street.

The medics are seen on video hurriedly pushing it back inside, leaving some ice packs behind, and continuing the short journey to the hospital.

In one of the more printable online comments made after the incident, newspaper reader Christian Sabido said that, "Anybody can make a mistake, but with this type of thing you should be careful."

At the time, doctors said the transplant operation had gone ahead, but added that they wanted to wait to confirm it had been successful.

Lively NKorean capital celebrates Lunar New Year (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? North Koreans bundled against the freezing cold paid respects again to late leader Kim Jong Il in Pyongyang's main plaza Monday and celebrated the Lunar New Year holiday with colorful flowers and children's games.

A massive portrait of Kim Jong Il, absent after the mourning period for his death last month, has been restored at the vast Kim Il Sung Square. People stood in line to bow and lay single red flowers ? the late leader's namesake "kimjongilia" begonias ? made of fabric.

The capital city that was barren and somber for several weeks is filled with color again: flower beds and planters bursting with blossoms and the red, white and blue national flag fluttering from signposts. Banners celebrating the year and posters marking the holiday called "Sol Myong Jol" here were pinned to buildings and walls.

The North Korean year "Juche 101" counts from 1912, the year founder Kim Il Sung was born.

The holiday comes as new leader Kim Jong Un, who has pledged to uphold his father's "military first" policy, visits military units. North Korea recently credited him with commanding nuclear tests and working closely with his father on military and economic matters, dismissing other countries' doubts about his ability to lead a country with an active nuclear program and chronic food shortages.

The new era of leadership comes as North Korea prepares to celebrate the 100th anniversary in April of the birth of national founder, late President Kim Il Sung.

In downtown Pyongyang, lanterns printed with "2012" and "Congratulations" dangled from the eaves of Pothong Gate. At the plaza in front of the Pyongyang Grand Theater, hundreds of children scampered and shouted as they flew kites and played traditional Korean games in freezing temperatures.

Pyongyang residents said they were encouraged to celebrate the holiday as they usually do, despite the death of Kim Jong Il, only the second leader North Koreans have known since the Democratic People's Republic of Korea was founded in 1948. State television aired a segment late Sunday on making rice cake soup, a traditional New Year's meal in both Koreas.

At the Mangyongdae Schoolchildren's Palace, high-ranking military and political officials watched an annual song-and-dance performance by students and a troupe of performers from the ethnic Korean community in Japan.

On Mansudae Street, Ro Chang Hae said his first emotion on Lunar New Year's Day was to miss the late leader.

"My eyes sting with tears whenever I think about how he provided us with such a comfortable home and always worried so much about us year after year," he told The Associated Press.

His granddaughters, an 8-year-old dressed in a school uniform and a 3-year-old wearing in a pink Korean dress, bowed as they wished him well.

The girls poured a tumbler of Korean liquor for him, saying: "Grandfather, we hope you'll be healthy and hope for your longevity."

Ro, 68, said the whole family would gather at lunchtime for rice cake soup.

Jimmy Fallon Sued For Female Bias at Work

Jimmy Fallon is being accused of gender-based favoritism at work. Bu a guy.

A fired staff member's suing Jimmy and NBC Universal for discrimination. In a lawsuit, Paul Tarascio claims he was dropped from his position as first stage manager at Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and replaced by a "totally incompetent woman."

Tarascio thus accuses Fallon of "gender bias."

Fallon in Action

Tarascio also alleges his replacement was "a less qualified woman" who constantly asked him how to do the job, and screwed up her stage manager duties.

He claims other male staffers on the night owl program, such as audio technicians and a Prop-Master, were also replaced by women at Jimmy's request.

Tarascio says the director said "Jimmy just prefers to take direction from a woman and "knowingly fabricated alleged performance issues" about Tarascio.

Tarascio is suing for punitive damages and lost wages. Calls to Jimmy's rep and NBC Universal were not returned. It's unclear if anyone still works there.

Fourth "Underworld" film leads domestic box office (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Vampires and werewolves lured moviegoers to theaters this weekend as the fourth "Underworld" movie topped box office charts with $25.4 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales, studio estimates released on Sunday showed.

"Underworld: Awakening" stars Kate Beckinsale as a vampire leading the charge in a battle against humans trying to drive her species and the werewolves to extinction.

The fourth movie, playing in 3,078 locations, opened stronger than two of the three earlier films in the franchise, which opened in 2003. Weekend sales finished "at the high end of where we hoped," said Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution for Sony Pictures. Audiences were eager to see Beckinsale return to the lead role, he said. She had starred in the first two films but skipped the third.

"Awakening" is the first "Underworld" movie in 3D and cost about $70 million to produce. The movie fell flat with critics as just 24 percent gave a positive review on aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. But audiences polled by survey firm CinemaScore awarded the movie an A-.

In second place, World War Two story "Red Tails" far exceeded studio forecasts with $19.1 million in North America (United States and Canada).

"Red Tails" stars Terrence Howard and Cuba Gooding Jr. in a drama about Tuskegee Airmen -- a black pilot group in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War Two. Producer George Lucas paid the film's $58 million production cost plus marketing expenses, and distributor 20th Century Fox had forecast $8 million to $10 million in domestic ticket sales for weekend.

"Never in our wildest dreams did we think we could pull off a number like this," said Chris Aronson, senior vice president for domestic distribution at 20th Century Fox. He said audiences clearly enjoyed the film, giving it an A grade in polling by CinemaScore. Critics' reviews on Rotten Tomatoes came in at 34 percent positive.

WAHLBERG MOVIE DROPS TO THIRD

Last weekend's winner, thriller "Contraband" starring Mark Wahlberg, finished its second weekend in theaters in third place, grabbing $12.2 million domestically.

"Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," a drama about a boy trying to make sense of his father's death on 9/11, landed in fourth place with $10.5 million. The movie had opened in a small number of theaters on Christmas but expanded nationwide this weekend. The film stars Thomas Horn as the boy and Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock as his parents.

In fifth place, Steven Soderbergh-directed spy tale "Haywire" took in $9 million domestically, just beating distributor Relativity Media's projection of about $8 million.

"Haywire" features mixed martial arts fighter Gina Carano as an operative who is double-crossed and becomes the target of assassins. While critics praised the film with an 82 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences were not impressed. The film earned a D+ rating from CinemaScore.

Elsewhere this weekend, two movies that won Golden Globe awards last week expanded to more theaters.

Silent film "The Artist," winner for best musical or comedy film, doubled its sales to $2.4 million after moving into in 662 theaters from 446 last week.

"The Iron Lady," which won Meryl Streep best actress at the Globes for her role as Margaret Thatcher, dropped 32 percent from a week ago despite expanding by more than 800 theaters to 1,076 locations. The movie took in $3.7 million over the weekend.

The movie division of Sony Corp distributed "Underworld." Time Warner Inc unit Warner Bros. released "Extremely Loud." News Corp unit 20th Century Fox distributed "Red Tails." The privately held Weinstein Co. released "The Artist" and "The Iron Lady." Privately held Relativity Media released "Haywire" in the United States, and Alliance Films distributed the movie in Canada.

Gingrich says he can 'shake up' nation's capital (AP)

TAMPA, Fla. ? Fresh off a big win in South Carolina, Republican Newt Gingrich found himself on defense Monday as the volatile GOP presidential contest shifted to Florida.

The former House speaker answered critics who questioned his temperament by saying he would be a nominee who would "shake up Washington." He also accused chief rival Mitt Romney of misstating his dealings with mortgage giant Freddie Mac.

Appearing on ABC's "Good Morning America" hours before a campaign rally in Tampa, Gingrich basked in his come-from-behind triumph in South Carolina. His win made for three different winners in the first three states, with former Sen. Rick Santorum winning Iowa and Romney taking New Hampshire.

Gingrich's campaign said it had raked in $1 million in the first 24 hours since South Carolina's primary Saturday.

Frequently the aggressor in the race, Gingrich is taking fire from all sides now as Florida campaigning ramps up ahead of the pivotal Jan. 31 primary.

Romney has been calling Gingrich a lobbyist and demanded that he release consulting contracts related to Freddie Mac. Gingrich flatly denied lobbying on the firm's behalf.

"It's not true. He knows it's not true. He's deliberately saying things he knows are false," Gingrich said. "I just think that's what the next week will be like.

The battle over financial transparency has gone both ways.

For weeks, Gingrich demanded that Romney release his personal tax records. The businessman and former Massachusetts governor now says he will.

Gingrich told ABC he has campaign lawyers working to make Freddie Mac records public; he said the decision rests with the Center for Health Transformation, which he founded but no longer owns. Two former Gingrich companies earned $1.6 million over eight years from Freddie Mac. Gingrich has said he only earned about $35,000 a year himself.

Gingrich's work for Freddie Mac has come under scrutiny because of its role in the housing meltdown.

On Sunday, some Republican leaders voiced worry about Gingrich's combative style.

He acknowledged Monday that some key players in the party don't want to see him win the nomination, but he also seems to be enjoying the attention.

"I think you're going to see the establishment go crazy in the next week or two," Gingrich said.

(AP) ? Alabama's plan to beat Kentucky involved swarming freshman Anthony Davis.

The only place he and the rest of the Wildcats found some elbow room was at the free-throw line.

Terrence Jones scored 15 points and No. 2 Kentucky hit all eight of its free throws in the final minute to hold on to beat Alabama 77-71 on Saturday for the Wildcats' 47th straight home victory.

"That's one of the more physical games I've played. It's going to get worse. I've just got to fight through it," said Davis, who finished 2 of 10 from the field and 7 of 9 from the free-throw line for 11 points. "There's going to be other teams just like that. There's not going to be any games off ? Vanderbilt, Florida, Georgia. They're all going to be games where we have to come out and be physical."

Kentucky (19-1, 5-0 Southeastern Conference) took the lead for good early in the first half, but Alabama's Trevor Releford scored all 17 of his points in the second half to keep the Crimson Tide (13-6, 2-3) close until the end.

"We came into the game and we knew we had to be physical and hit them because they're athletic and long in the front court," Alabama's JaMychal Green said. "Our focus mainly was hitting them, being physical and rebounding."

All of Alabama's hitting turned into foul shots and the teams combined for 45 fouls called.

Jones made Kentucky's final field goal with 6:57 left, but the Wildcats hit 23 of 29 second-half free-throw attempts and scored their final 15 points from the free-throw line.

Green had 22 points and 12 rebounds and Trevor Lacey added 10 points for Alabama, which lost its third in a row, but may have provided a blueprint for how to slow the Wildcats.

"I always kept a body on Davis if he rolled to the goal because we watched him play," Green said. "We saw a lot of lobs and dunks, so we knew that's how he scored. We just kept him off the boards."

But not out of the box score.

Leading 75-71 in the closing seconds, Davis blocked his fourth shot of the game and grabbed his ninth rebound when Charles Hankerson drove into the lane. Davis was fouled with 4.5 seconds left and made both his free throws for the final margin.

"Somebody's hip was on him 24-7 until the game ended," Kentucky coach John Calipari said. "As a matter of fact, they put a hip on him in the postgame handshake, too."

That provided the Wildcats' other opportunities to score.

Doron Lamb had 14 points, freshman Michael Kidd-Gilchrist 13, Darius Miller 11 and freshman Marquis Teague 10 for the Wildcats.

With 1:06 left, Kidd-Gilchrist fouled out trying to stop Andrew Steele, who hit two free throws that cut Kentucky's lead to 69-67.

The teams traded free throws with Miller making two foul shots and Green added two more with 37 seconds to play. Teague hit two and Steele answered with two more when Lamb fouled him on the inbounds pass with 24 seconds to go that cut it to 73-71.

But Miller hit two more free throws with 14 seconds to play before Davis' block. He set the school's single-season block record in Kentucky's previous win against Arkansas and added to his nation's leading blocks total.

"It was a rough game," said Davis, who has 93 blocks this year. "We had to fight through it, grind it out and that's what we did."

Releford rallied the Crimson Tide and Alabama trailed 49-48 with 12:37 left, but never took the lead despite Releford's scooping layup just beyond Davis' attempted block off the glass and then his floater that rattled around the rim and fell that cut Kentucky's lead to 55-52.

Jones' jumper made it 62-57 with 6:57 left, but Kentucky wouldn't score again from the field. The Wildcats fouled out Alabama's leading scorer and rebounder Tony Mitchell with 5:32 left.

Mitchell scored six points on 2-of-9 shooting for his second straight subpar performance after failing to score in 31 minutes in a loss to Vanderbilt.

Kentucky lost to Alabama last year on the road, but avenged it with a victory in the SEC tournament and got off to a fast start against the Crimson Tide in this one, too.

After Alabama took an early 5-1 lead, Kidd-Gilchrist sparked Kentucky on a 15-3 run that they never relinquish.

Davis missed his first seven shots before he followed up a miss by Teague with a dunk that gave Kentucky a five-point lead. The Wildcats maintained that advantage, taking a 37-32 lead into the break that they managed to hold onto throughout the foul-filled second half.

"Especially at the start, we weren't able to play through the physical play," Calipari said. "Until we learn to do that, every team's going to play us that way."

Predictions determine that will the need for energy will possess increased simply by Sixty-five per nickle in between right now as well as The year 2030 so it is clear which alternative sources need to have to be produced. Bio diesel is actually proving to always be one of those alternative sources and so the demand for it will merely boost.

To people sceptics which feel that bio diesel just isn?t way up to the job, then it is worth jotting it was utilized in the The Mans 24-hour strength ethnic background through the Lola access, knowning that a number of main airways are using the idea in a range of mixtures in test travel arrangements they are hoping will enable for cheaper air travel that will will get an a lot diminished carbon foot print.

Curiously, the source of this bio-diesel will be the Jatropha tree, which is what exactly is making a lot pleasure when considering to investing in bio diesel. This is not a new source of green oil; it really is currently used for transfer along with in a few countries it?s also used to generate energy creation on a large range. The beauty of it really is that it is nearly co2 natural when it?s utilised along with, of course, it soaks in skin tightening and if it?s developing.

The fruit which the Jatropha creates gives a normal oil that can become bio diesel; the husk of the fruit can even be crushed and used up for heating, or even employed because a fertilizer, in medicines and also the creation of latex. It takes one tree to produce an actu of oil and a 1000 trees (therefore a thousands of ltrs) can end up being produced on one acre.

Obviously, fiscal issues must be regarded as when considering investing in bio diesel: it requires three years for a Jatropha tree to achieve the greatest productivity, however this particular does not necessarily mean that it wouldn?t offer an excellent return sooner than this particular. In fact, mindful predictions calculate that the first year will bring a return of 5%; the second year will double to carry a return of 12 per cent; and thereon for upwards to 45 years there will end up being a return of 20 per cent.

These figures happen to be calculated on a conventional price of oil, so it is safe to assume that ought to the price of oil rise significantly, therefore will the desire for bio diesel and, therefore, the dividends.
