Police break up Angolan war veterans' protest

(AP) ? Police have dispersed more than 100 protesting Angolan war veterans who claim they have not received promised payments.

Police used tear gas and shots were heard during running skirmishes in downtown Luanda Wednesday that lasted more than an hour. It was unclear if live ammunition or rubber bullets.

Late Wednesday, Luanda's provincial government said in a statement read on state television that several protesters were detained. The government did not say whether anyone was injured.

It was the second veterans protest this month. Many veterans who fought against South African- and U.S.-backed insurgents say they never received promised pensions or disability subsidies. The state news agency, Angop, quoted an army statement Wednesday saying payments were resumed June 15.
