Mega Millions: Will lotteries and other gambling move to the Internet?

In December, the?US Department of Justice?announced that it was reversing its position that all Internet gambling was illegal, clearing the way for a potential boom in online gambling.?

For the millions of Americans who bought Mega Millions lottery tickets, the waiting is over.

The vast majority lost, as they knew they would in a gamble with mega-long odds (176 million to one). A handful won. The names of those whose tickets matched the ten winning numbers haven?t been announced yet, but state officials in Kansas, Illinois, and Maryland say winning tickets were sold there.

They?ll split what?s left of the $640 million jackpot (combined from 42 state lotteries) after Uncle Sam and state taxing authorities claim their share. Others whose $1 ticket matched some of the winning numbers could be paid lesser amounts ranging from $2 to $250,000 (where the odds still were 4 million to one).

States are the biggest winners. Lottery ticket buyers spent some $1.5 billion, most of which goes into state coffers.

The Monitor's View:?The odds and ends of Mega Millions jackpot lottery

Forty-three states now have lotteries, and some gambling advocates are pushing to legalize online lotteries and other forms of Internet gambling.

In December, the?US Department of Justice?announced that it was reversing its position that all Internet gambling was illegal, clearing the way for a potential boom in online gambling.?

States would have to approve such steps. At this point, only Nevada allows online poker there and the District of Columbia is moving in that direction as well. Minnesota has an online lottery. Other states are considering forms of online gambling ? which is practiced illegally via offshore and underground Internet sites.

Some experts warn that legalizing online gambling more broadly would increase the number of problem gamblers.

"If it's legalized, that would put electronic gambling ? the crack cocaine of gambling addiction ? on every work desk, [in] every living room, [on] every mobile phone," John Kindt, a professor of business and legal policy at the?University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign?and a senior editor of the US International Gambling Report, told Monitor correspondent Husna Haq.

"It's just bad social and economic policy," he said. "It's going to expand the social ills and taxpayer costs of addicted gambling and problem gambling. Desperate states will be getting in new lottery revenues at the expense of creating new addicted gamblers and problem gamblers."

Two million adults in the US are estimated to meet criteria for pathological gambling in a given year, according to the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG).

Another 4-6 million would be considered problem gamblers, reports NCPG. That is, they do not meet the full diagnostic criteria for pathological gambling, but meet one of more of the criteria and are experiencing problems due to their gambling behavior.

Some three percent of Americans are problem gamblers, according to other estimates, a figure that?s higher for teenagers and college students.

Experts on gambling addiction warn that expanding online betting could make the problem worse.

?Online gambling websites are among the fastest growing and most profitable businesses in existence today,? according to the TechAddiction Information and Treatment Service in Nova Scotia, Canada. ?Compared to traditional land-based casinos, online gambling websites are able to operate at a fraction of the cost, do not require tangible materials or equipment (machines, tables, security cameras, a physical building, etc.), and do not need the hundreds of staff that would normally be required for a traditional casino.?

Meanwhile, millions of Americans continue to buy lottery tickets, dreaming of the next Mega Millions event.

Obama could face election-year jam on gay marriage

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) ? President Barack Obama could be caught in an election-year bind on gay marriage, wedged between the pressure of supporters who want him to back same-sex marriage and the political perils of igniting an explosive social issue in the midst of the campaign.

Interviews with gay rights advocates and people close to Obama's campaign suggest it is no longer a matter of if, but when the president publicly voices his support. But Obama backers are split over whether that will happen before the November elections.

Gay marriage is already a big issue in a handful of states that have it on their ballots in November, including Maine, where Obama was headlining two fundraisers Friday. He was not expected to wade into the issue during his remarks.

The president also headlined fundraisers Friday in Vermont, one of six states, plus the District of Columbia, where gay marriage is legal. He did not mention the subject during his two appearances there.

Once an opponent of gay marriage, Obama declared in 2010 that his personal views on the subject were "evolving." He has gone no further in public since then.

People familiar with the Obama campaign's deliberations have tamped down expectations that the president might declare his support for gay marriage before the election. They say the campaign's internal conversations on the issue focus instead on how to energize gay and lesbian voters in spite of Obama's lack of clarity on the issue.

Public support for gay marriage is increasing in the U.S., including among the independent voters who are a key to general election success.

But regardless of whether Obama has made up his mind on the subject, it's not the topic his campaign wants to be talking about heading into an election expected to be decided largely on economic issues. As White House and campaign officials learned all too well during the controversy over birth control access earlier this year, stepping into social issues ? even those with Democratic support ? can quickly throw the president's message off course.

While Obama aides saw the contraception issue as an important appeal to women voters, there may be little election-year payoff for the president taking a stand on gay marriage.

Obama's record on gay rights issues, including the repeal of the military's ban on openly gay service members and an order for the Justice Department not to enforce a provision that defines marriage as between one man and one woman, has already solidified the overwhelming backing of gay rights supporters. His Republican rivals, including GOP front-runner Mitt Romney, not only oppose gay marriage, but also some other legal protections for gays and lesbians.

As for Obama, "The gay rights community is now enthusiastically in his corner in terms of the re-election, so the pressure to deliver before the election is off," said Richard Socarides, a prominent gay rights advocate.

The risk in Obama publicly backing gay marriage before the election is that it could become a rallying cry for conservatives who have thus far been reluctant to get behind Romney.

Still, many Democrats and gay rights advocates believe Obama may end up being forced to take a position on the issue before November.

The most pressing effort comes from within Obama's own party. Several high-profile Democrats, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and more than 20 Senate Democrats, want support for gay marriage added to the party's election platform. The platform will be adopted at the Democratic National Convention in early September, where Obama will accept the presidential nomination.

So far, Obama advisers have sidestepped questions about whether he would support a gay marriage plank on the platform.

"We don't even have a platform committee yet, much less a platform," Obama senior adviser David Plouffe said in a television interview.

A person close to the Obama campaign said the president's re-election team is wary of the platform effort and prefers to let the president move on the issue at his own pace.

People familiar with the campaign's thinking requested anonymity in order to discuss internal strategy.

Gay rights advocates hope state ballot initiatives on gay marriage, like the one in Maine, could force Obama to weigh in, as he has on other state issues.

"He's going to be in a lot of situations like this where the issue becomes unavoidable," said Socarides, a former Clinton White House official. "Even though he might want to avoid this, I think he's going to come up right against it in so many situations in the next couple of months."

Obama's reluctance to embrace gay marriage has increasingly put him at odds with a majority of Americans. A Washington Post/ABC News poll this month found that 52 percent felt it should be legal for gay and lesbian couples to get married, while 43 percent said it should be illegal.

Support for gay marriage is highest among Democrats, with 64 percent supportive of the issue. Just over half of independents ? 54 percent ? back legalized gay marriage, according to the Post/ABC poll. Support among Republicans is the lowest, at 39 percent.

Gay rights advocates say those numbers ? particularly the growing support among independents ? suggest there would be little political risk for Obama in backing gay marriage. And they say taking a stand in an election year could help boost enthusiasm among gay voters and young people, two core Obama constituencies.

Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said the president's evolution on gay marriage will be personal, not political.

"The president and the president alone will come to a decision," LaBolt said.

Maine's state Legislature approved gay marriage in 2009, but voters rejected it 53 percent to 47 percent that November. Gay marriage supporters believe enough people have changed their minds that the outcome will be different this time around.

German firms halt UK nuclear plan

There has been a setback to the government's plan to attract investment in new nuclear power stations.

Two key players, RWE Npower and E.On, have announced they will not develop new nuclear power projects in the UK.

The two were planning to invest in new plants in Anglesey and Oldbury-on-Severn, near Bristol, under a joint venture called Horizon Nuclear Power.

The government says it is disappointed but there remains "considerable interest" in the project.

The firms blamed problems raising finance for power projects and costs associated with decommissioning nuclear power plants in Germany.

They formed Horizon Nuclear Power, based in Gloucester, in 2009.

It was working on plans for new nuclear power stations at Wylfa on the Isle of Anglesey and at Oldbury-on-Severn in South Gloucestershire.

They are two of eight new projects named by the government to replace old power plants which are due to close by the end of the decade, and which make up about a quarter of the UK's generating capacity.

But last May Germany decided to close down its nuclear power stations by 2022, following the disaster at Japan's Fukushima nuclear facility.

For RWE and E.On, which own most of Germany's power stations, it was an expensive decision and undermined their enthusiasm to invest in nuclear power elsewhere.

"It's a big deal that they are pulling out," Malcolm Grimston, an associate fellow at the Chatham House think tank, told BBC News.

"If you look at the utilities in Europe then they are two of the biggest. There aren't that many huge players out there who could take over."

RWE and E.On want to find another company, or consortium, to take over the project.

Volker Beckers, chief executive of RWE Npower, said: "We continue to believe that nuclear power has an important role to play in the UK's future energy mix.

"We are therefore looking to ensure that work on development, including grid connection, can be taken up quickly by other potential investors."

Energy Minister Charles Hendry said: "E.On and RWE's withdrawal is clearly very disappointing, but the partners have clearly explained that this decision was based on pressures elsewhere in their businesses and not any doubts about the role of nuclear in the UK's energy future.

Company sources say there is a make-or-break decision to be made towards the end of the year by ministers on nuclear subsidies?

"The UK's new nuclear programme is far more than one consortia and there remains considerable interest.

"Plans from EDF/Centrica and Nugen are on track and Horizon's sites offer new players an excellent ready-made opportunity to enter the market," he said.

EDF said it was progressing well with plans for two new nuclear units at Hinkley Point in Somerset.

But the French company said its final investment decision hinged on it being a profitable project, and for that government reform was crucial.

"The government's framework for electricity market reform must ensure we have a project which is good for consumers, policy-makers, jobs and investors," said Vincent de Rivaz, chief executive of EDF Energy.

Analysts are now questioning whether firms can make money out of nuclear power in the UK.

The government's energy strategy is crumbling?

End Quote Doug Parr Greenpeace

"How commercially viable these plants are is very questionable," Rhys Kealley, lead analyst at Datamonitor, said.

"Even Centrica, who are partnered at the moment with EDF in a similar venture, is reluctant to make a commitment and they will be making a final decision on that some time before the end of the year."

The move by the German firms follows the decision last September by Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) to pull out of a deal to develop a new nuclear power station.

The energy company sold its 25% stake in NuGeneration to partners GDF Suez and Iberdrola.

It said it wanted to focus on renewable energy, as do its German rivals.

RWE says it will continue to invest in low carbon technologies. It has also invested ?1.6bn in gas-fired power stations in the UK.

E.On says it will concentrate on projects with quicker results than nuclear, which takes 10 years to start generating electricity.

Britain is being left as an also-ran in the energy market internationally and the nuclear specifically?

End Quote Gary Smith GMB union

The future of nuclear power may become clearer in May when the government announces its plan to reform the energy market.

Measures will be introduced to encourage investment and create a balanced range of electricity sources.

BBC business editor Robert Peston says sources at the energy companies describe this as "a make-or-break decision" as to whether the government is prepared to abandon its previous position that there won't be any substantial subsidies for nuclear, either from taxpayers or customers.

Labour stressed that nuclear power was vital to "to make us less reliant on volatile fossil fuel prices, increase our energy security, and keep prices down for families".

"RWE and E.On's decision... underscores the importance of the government's electricity market reform delivering a framework that will provide certainty and confidence for other potential investors," said Caroline Flint, shadow energy and climate change secretary.

Greenpeace's policy director Doug Parr said: "The government's energy strategy is crumbling.

"Not even the billions of pounds of taxpayers' money they have offered as incentives to the German and French nuclear industry are enough to make a new generation of power stations economically viable."

'A shambles'

Unions have been highly critical of government policy as well.

Gary Smith from the union GMB, which represents workers in the nuclear industry, told the BBC: "I think it is clear, the government's energy policy is in absolute tatters. It's a shambles.

"Britain is being left as an also-ran in the energy market internationally and the nuclear specifically."

According to the union, Unite, the proposed nuclear power station at Wylfa could generate 5,000 jobs on Anglesey and support jobs at the Springfields fuel plant in central Lancashire.

The Prospect union, which represents some of the 120 highly-skilled employees working at Horizon's headquarters in Gloucester, as well as staff at the existing Wylfa site, expressed concern about the broader economic consequences.

"At a time when we face the closure of several large coal-fired power stations between now and the end of 2015, the Horizon venture was to be a major contributor in achieving a new UK fleet of nuclear power stations to provide a secure low-carbon energy supply for the future," said Mike Clancy, general secretary-designate of Prospect.

James Cameron describes deepest spot in ocean as 'barren' (+video)

Filmmaker James Cameron became the first person to make a solo dive to Challenger Deep, the deepest known point in the ocean, in a custom-built submersible.?

James Cameron has returned from the abyss.?

Skip to next paragraph National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence James Cameron completed a record-breaking dive to the lowest point of the Mariana Trench. See scenes as Cameron's sub, DEEPSEA CHALLENGER, resurfaced, and Cameron emerged from the pilot's capsule around noon, local time (10 p.m. ET March 25th).

The director of "Titanic" and "Avatar" successfully completed the 6.8-mile dive to the Challenger Deep, thought to be the lowest point on Earth, and has returned to the surface. The filmmaker's verdict on the spot, which has been visited by humans only once before:?"I just sat there looking out the window, looking at this barren, desolate lunar plain, appreciating," Cameron told the Associated Press.

In other words, he didn't see much, save for a few inch-long amphipods, shrimplike bottom feeders, scuttling across the soft ocean floor. Due to a hyraulic failure on his submarine's sample collector, Cameron was also unable to bring back much in the way of souvenirs.?

Cameron is just the third person in history to visit Challenger Deep, which lies in the 1,500-mile-long Mariana Trench in the North Pacific. The other two adventurers, US Navy lieutenant Don Walsh and Swiss scientist Jacques Piccard, took their dive together in 1960. But they didn't see much, as their landing stirred up so much sediment that it obscured their vision. After just 20 minutes on the bottom, the two explorers returned to the surface empty-handed.

Unlike the vehicle that transported Walsh and Piccard, Cameron made his trip in the Deepsea Challenger, a vessel that is much taller than it is wide. This unique, 24-foot-long ship took eight years to build in Australia. It's cost hasn't been disclosed.

The vessel is innovative in several ways. To protect against the potentially crushing pressure in the deep sea, the project's lead engineer, Ron Allum, designed a new foam flotation material Isofloat that will not crack, compress or lose buoyancy on the journey. This foam makes up 70 percent of the submersible's volume.

Other important components of the sub are its lights and cameras. Cameron captured hi-resolution 3D footage during his dive.?

Scientific feats such as trips to the bottom of the sea, are most commonly tackled by governments and scientific organizations. And other entrepreneurs like Richard Branson are also trying to get to the deepest part of the sea.

But Cameron has distinguished himself. Not only does he have access to the necessary fiscal resources, but his talent with a camera, curiosity and adventurous spirit set him apart.

?Imagination feeds exploration,? Cameron said, according to National Geographic, one of the trip's sponsors, before the journey. ?You have to imagine the possible before you can go and do it.?

Though he has the necessary skills for the job, Cameron's physical attributes provided some challenges: All six feet, two inches of Cameron were?crammed inside a metal sphere with a diameter at the surface of just 43 inches. During the dive,?Cameron reported that his sub shrank by three inches, due to the immense pressure. ?

"I can't say it's very comfortable," Cameron told the AP. "And you can't stretch out."

Cancer remains a medical mystery despite all of the research efforts devoted to understanding and controlling it. The most sought-after tumor model is one that would be able to formulate theoretical and computational tools to predict cancer progression and propose individual treatment strategies.

To better understand the role complex tumor-host interactions play in tumor growth, Princeton University researchers developed a cellular automation model for tumor growth in heterogeneous microenvironments. They then used this same model to investigate the effects of pressure on the growth of a solid tumor in a confined heterogeneous environment, such as a brain cancer growing in the cranium, and discovered that pressure accumulated during tumor growth can lead to a wide spectrum of growth dynamics and morphologies for both noninvasive and invasive tumors.

Depending on the magnitude of the pressure and the physical properties of the host environment, the types of tumor patterns that emerge range from strongly malignant tumors characterized by finger-like protrusions at the tumor surface to those in which fingering growth is diminished. These results should have important applications for cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy.

(AP) ? A 35-year-old man was arrested Sunday in the gruesome killing of five people in a San Francisco home, police said.

Binh Thai Luc, a San Francisco resident, was taken into custody Sunday morning and booked on five counts of murder, Police Chief Greg Suhr said.

The bodies of the three women and two men were found early Friday by a woman with access to the home in the southern part of the city. Police said the crime scene was so tangled that police couldn't determine the cause of deaths.

"This was a complex crime scene. We had five deceased persons apparently from blunt force trauma. We didn't know what we had," Suhr said.

He declined to release details of the arrest or what led investigators to Luc.

He also did not say whether investigators have determined a motive for the killings, saying only that Luc knew the victims and that an "edged weapon" was involved in the slayings.

India to continue Iran oil import without violating law

New Delhi: India plans to continue import of crude oil from Iran without violating any international law, Oil Minister S Jaipal Reddy said on Friday.

"We have a systematic plan for receiving oil from Iran," he told reporters on sidelines of the Asia Gas Partnership Summit.

"We are envisaging no cut (in purchase of crude oil from Iran)," he said while asking the United States and other western nations to take into account India's oil needs.

India bought about 18 million tons or 12 per cent of its needs from Iran worth about $12 billion.

India to continue Iran oil import without violating law

The US had earlier this week exempted Japan and 10 European nations from its financial sanctions because they cut imports from Iran, but left India and China out of the list.

"We continue to receive representations from the US and other countries. We respect their sentiments (but) we have requested them to appreciate our need," he said.

India is Iran's second-biggest oil client after China. It bought about 18 million tons or 12 per cent of its needs from Iran worth about $12 billion.

"Our companies need oil from Iran and we will continue to import without violation of international law in letter and spirit," he said. "However, I would like to take this opportunity to assure the consumers that there will be no problem of supplies at all."

Is the Bottom In for Real Estate ETFs? | ETF Trends

The real estate market has been stuck in a lull for years now, but Wall Street?s so-called smart money is expecting a recovery in housing. Investors who believe in a continued rebound may take a look at real estate-related exchange traded fund options.

While housing starts numbers were weaker-than-expected for February, January data was revised upward and building permits rose 5.1% to pre-2008 financial crisis levels, reports Aaron Task for The Daily Ticker.

?The thinking is we?ve bottomed out and we?re going slowly start rebounding in terms of pricing,? Greg Zuckerman of The Wall Street Journal said in the report. ?Over the last couple of months some of the best investors on the street?have been making big bets on homebuilders.?

Firms like SAC Capital, Blackstone and Caxton Associates are among the funds taking on a greater weighting in homebuilders. [Homebuilder ETFs Double S&P 500?s Return]

Housing market bulls point to real estates? low affordability as a result of low interest rates, heavy price slashes since the 2006 highs and pent-up demand from new families and young adults. [Real Estate: List of REIT ETFs]

However, the naysayers note that home prices are still high on a historic basis and prices have yet to fall below fair value, which usually occurs after a bubble. Additionally, they add that there is still a ?shadow inventory,? foreclosures are rising, unemployment remains elevated and Treasury yields are increasing.

Existing home sales dropped 0.9% in February from January to 4.59 million, but it was still the strongest February in five years, report Allan Zibel and Eric Morath for The Wall Street Journal. The National Association of Realtors stated that February sales were 8.8% higher year-over-year and the first two months of the year showed the strongest start since 2007.

?We feel very good about the latest sales trend,? said Lawrence Yun, National Association of Realtors? top economist. ?Buyers are very serious this year.?

Housing-related ETFs are among the best performers, including:

Romney Cleans Up

The Republican nominating contest could take a long time. So it's probably wise not to clutch the dashboard every time there's a bend in the road. Still, there was something different about Romney's win in Illinois. On?recent primary days, he has been able to claim he won the most delegates, but Santorum has emerged from those nights with the energy and excitement.?Tonight Romney can crow about having the excitement and winning the most delegates in a state where he didn't have a home field advantage like Michigan or a regional connection like New Hampshire. Even when he has won, Romney has had to say unsatisfying things like "a win is a win." After Illinois, he can just smile. Everyone gets it.

What music do pets prefer? - Holy Kaw!

Leaving on classical music or soothing music for your pets might not be best for them.

Against the conventional wisdom that music is a uniquely human phenomenon, ongoing research shows that animals actually do have the capacity for music. But rather than liking classical or rock, Snowdon, an animal psychologist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has discovered that animals march to the beat of a different drum altogether.

Energy giants target Africa's gas

The balmy waters of the Indian Ocean, close to East Africa, are a long way from the cold and notoriously stormy North Sea, but Tanzania could soon be profitable territory for Statoil of Norway.

Statoil and its American partner Exxon Mobil have made the biggest offshore discovery yet of gas reserves off the coast of Tanzania.

The Zafarani field, which both companies hope will be bigger than first estimates suggest, is close to the region off the coast of Mozambique, where even bigger deposits of gas are being developed by Anadarko and ENI.

"This is the biggest discovery made outside Norway by Statoil ever," a delighted Statoil vice president, Tim Dodson, tells the BBC.

But beyond the impact on Statoil itself, Mr Dodson recognises how the discovery could transform the fortunes of an East African country that has in the past focused more on safari tourism than oil and gas.

"This is [also] the biggest discovery that has been made offshore Tanzania and in that respect it's extremely important for [both] Statoil and Tanzania," he says.

Significant reserves

The world's major energy companies are paying more attention to the waters of the Indian Ocean, off East Africa.

There are some very important discoveries in Mozambique and this is creating new jobs, new industries, new services?

End Quote Joachim Chissano Former President of Mozambique

"Statoil thinks this is a new reservoir, different to the others found in the broad geographical region, and therefore [it] might well have very significant reserves," according to Nick McGregor, an oil and gas analyst with Redmayne Bentley.

Making a major discovery of gas under the ocean floor is only the beginning, however.

The discovery then produces the next challenge of pumping the commodity out and making it profitable.

"The big problem with gas is its relatively lower margin than oil, so it needs to be large discoveries to make it worthwhile," says Mr McGregor, noting that Statoil's find off Tanzania 's coast "certainly isn't as large as some of the stuff that's been found off Mozambique recently, where it's now expected [to be] 60 trillion cubic feet of gas".

Mozambique gas

In offshore drilling industry terms, Statoil's Tanzania discovery is a stone's throw from the lucrative gas fields off the coast of Mozambique, which are being developed by Italy's ENI and Anadarko of the US.

The fields are promising, so the industry's big players are clearly keen to secure their share of East Africa's offshore reserves.

Royal Dutch Shell, for instance, recently expressed an interest in acquiring Cove, whose main asset is an 8.5% interest in the block where Anadarko has found 30 trillion cubic feet of gas.

A former President of Mozambique, Joachim Chissano, knows the development of a vibrant energy industry could transform his country's economy.

"There are some very important discoveries in Mozambique and this is creating new jobs, new industries, new services," he tells the BBC.

Developing infrastructure

The energy companies will have to develop infrastructure, from pipelines to terminals for ships, to push their operations forward, Mr Chissano reasons.

East Africa's offshore gas

  • Royal Dutch Shell offers $1.6 bn for Cove
  • Anadarko says Rovuma field in Mozambique has 30 trillion cubic feet of natural gas
  • Statoil says 5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in Tanzania's Zafarani field

This work alone will create plenty of jobs in Mozambique.

"Even if they did discover more gas, what they have discovered now is already very good for the long-term development of Mozambique," he says.

"And if you couple this with the mineral resources like coal, where we are certain of huge quantities also, this is causing the need to develop more infrastructure like railways and roads and power lines."

Asia gas

The main markets for East Africa's natural gas are likely to be in Asia, and that might explain why Thailand's PTT Exploration & Production has trumped Shell's takeover offer for Cove.

However, the Anglo-Dutch company has extensive experience of developing offshore gas and the Mozambique government, which will have to approve any deal, will recognise Shell's successful record of completing big liquid natural gas (LNG) projects.

The current operators of Mozambique's Rovuma gas field lack the experience of developing LNG operations.

Anadarko has a long history of exploration but little experience of taking an LNG project to its next stage.

Transforming economies

East African countries, especially Mozambique, are hoping their economies will be transformed by the growth of the gas industry.

But it will take significant investment to build infrastructure to support a vibrant energy industry in East Africa.

Billions will have to be invested pumping the gas from below the ocean floor of the Indian Ocean to terminals from where it will be transported on ships as LNG.

That is why the next phase of the developing the industry will need the involvement of the major players in the world's energy industry.

The big boys will also be attracted by the positive attitude from governments in East Africa. Dealing with the governments of countries such as Tanzania or Mozambique is probably a refreshing change from the confrontational challenge presented by national leaders such as Hugo Chavez in Venezuela.

Trying To Be Mint.com For Student Loans, Binksty Raises, Redesigns, Hits $10M In Debt-Under-View

Binksty Logo BLast October, we wrote about Binksty, a young startup that aims to give college students saddled with debt a one-stop shop to manage loans, pay off debt, as well as educate them on the best ways to save money. The student loan situation in the U.S. was atrocious then, and it continues to be atrocious now. A recent report from the New York Times shows that the total balance of student loans is currently $870 billion. Not only that, but 40 percent of people under 30 have outstanding student loans, the average of which is $23,300. If that's not enough to make you cringe, I don't know what is.

Transparency in the Internet Marketplace: A Move Towards E ...

Posted by Alexander Shen on Sunday, March 18, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

Since the dawn of the internet, transactions between buyers and sellers have moved from the physical to the electronic realm. While cash and check transactions still rule for smaller purchases, very rarely do consumers still insist on using a physical medium of exchange for larger expenditures. Credit cards, online banking, and other instruments of E-commerce have made it possible for actors in the modern economy to not only transfer larger amounts of currency, but also to do so more rapidly, efficiently, and safely. As a result, a number of economic activities such as stock exchanges, bank transfers, and even everyday shopping have begun to move to the internet.

The magnitude of this move is anything but insignificant. For example, online retail transactions have experienced rapid growth, doubling from $74 billion in 2004 to $145 billion in 2009. E-commerce manufacturing transactions experienced similar gains, increasing from a little less than $1 trillion in 2004 to $1.8 trillion in 2009. Even in this last year (2010-2011), total e- commerce retail sales increased by 10.9%, despite the economic downturn that continues to affect many traditional businesses. Most importantly, e-commerce growth has not shown signs of slowing in the near future. Online retail transactions are projected to further increase to $250 billion in 2014.

The reason for this phenomenon can be attributed to a number of factors distinct to either the consumer and or producer side. However, both producer and consumers are faced with the same truth: e-commerce will play an increasingly significant role in the American economy. Businesses will need to learn how to harness the potential of the internet lest they lose an important competitive edge. Likewise, consumers will need to adapt to a rather different marketplace, where in some cases the store may not even exist in the physical world, to gain the best value for their purchases.

The Internet. What is the nature of this new marketplace? The internet is a world of electronic data, where information and ideas can travel at the speed of light. Socially, it is a means by which individuals who may be separated by great distances can talk as if they are at the same location. Politically, it is the bastion of free speech, nearly untouchable by government hands (though potential legislations put that in question). Economically, it is the new way for sellers and buyers to connect, for businesses to communicate with each other, and for companies to show themselves to the world. E-commerce is becoming the mode of choice for transactions of all types in America.

There are a number of advantages to e-commerce over traditional commerce (commerce without use of the internet). The main benefit is connectivity. Traditionally, interactions between businesses and consumers took place inside an actual, physical building, like a store. However, a physical store is only able reach potential customers within a certain distance, and a business is limited in not only the number of stores it can build but also the locations in which the business can build them. However, an online store is granted access to approximately 240 million American internet users, simply by being online. The benefits of connectivity go even further beyond access, as advertising, news updates, and payment handling are all far more convenient and cost efficient through electronic means. For business to business interactions, e- commerce provides a way for different companies to connect, whether between cities or between continents. Other benefits of using e-commerce range from elimination of paper records to consolidation of operations in a single or a few locations.

Despite the move toward e- commerce, and despite the advantages of using the internet for economic activities, one significant problem still remains. It is not the technical limitations of computing technology, nor is it the increased security risks of online data storage. These are small problems compared to the big issue: information asymmetry.

Historically speaking, the seller always knows more about the product that the buyer. Whether the product is a physical good or a business product, the disparity between the information that the buyer needs to make a proper judgment about making a purchase and the information that the seller provides has existed since the beginning of trade itself.

Traditional commerce has done an adequate job of managing this disparity. For retail transactions, the buyer can view the product in real life, touch the product with his or her hands, and in most cases test the product out. In the case of business contracts, the buyer would be able to obtain all the information he or she needed by visiting the company?s facilities or by simply asking the seller. In both cases, the buyer rarely makes a wrong judgment solely because he or she lacks sufficient information.

The advent of e-commerce has widened this disparity to a significant degree. Although it is much easier to publish information through the internet, it is also much easier to conceal information from potential buyers. With e-commerce, there is no physical product for the customer to hold, inspect, or test. Instead, the customer is given a set of data pertaining to the product, which may include specifications, descriptions, and pictures. The customer pays for the product as shown by the seller, which may not be what the buyer wants in the first place.

As for business to business interactions such as investment, contracting, and other purchases, e- commerce has made calculation of risk increasingly difficult. Because barriers to entry are notably lower for online businesses, they are less likely to be successful, or permanent for that matter, than their traditional counterparts. Making sound judgments regarding such online businesses requires much more information, leading to the widening disparity between needed information and given information.

This information asymmetry has further affected a fundamental value of the American economy: trust. For business to consumer relations, establishment of trust is one of the key foundations if the business wishes to sell its products. However, the prevalence of online scams and phishing emails has severely eroded people?s trust in the internet, and consequently in online businesses. In a recent study, more than 90% of online consumers have refrained from completing an internet transaction due to fear of being defrauded.

Both sides lose here; the customer will not always buy the cheapest and highest quality product, and the best businesses will not always come out on top. Similarly, information asymmetry has led to a decrease in trust among online businesses themselves. Again, this is due to easy of entry, but ultimately the lack of trust in an online company may lead to its very downfall. While e-commerce has made doing business much more efficient and convenient, it has take a severe toll on the foundation of trust between economic actors.

Re-establishment of trust will need to go much farther than simply verifying ?you are who you say you are.? Online buyers, both businesses and consumers, need to know not only the identity of the seller, but also past performance of the seller, previous opinions, and a host of other data in order to make a sound judgment. In fact, an online survey showed that 87% of online consumers ?feel safer buying from websites that feature information about the business behind the website and its financial track record.? Unfortunately, this information is not always available to the public, and rarely is it made easily accessible by the company itself. Thus, the key to solving the information disparity will be transparency.

Transparency is a concept that has long been promoted in the political realm. Members of the public have routinely called for government on all levels to make clear the reasoning behind their actions and the flow of money supporting that action. I believe that this same concept should be applied to e-commerce, where instead of government transparency, we have business transparency. Businesses should be encouraged to show their past performance, their current goals, and their future investments.

The benefits of this change would only begin with the re-establishment of trust. The information disparity would be made insignificant, and the e- commerce world would receive a massive stimulus, one that perhaps could propel us out of this current economic recession.

Information transparency for now remains an idea in its infancy. Many websites already have mechanisms that track the past performance of other online businesses and independent sellers. Yet these systems often only cover small portions of the total online sellers, and they only track a specific profile, not a specific person. What we need is a truly universal system that can track individuals and business entities all across the internet and that provides a comprehensive analysis of past performance and credibility. What we need is a system where trust can be gained based on readily available data.

E-commerce in the American economy is growing at a remarkable rate. The internet has transformed the way that consumers and businesses interact and how businesses interact with each other. However, the current state of e-commerce has produced an information asymmetry, where a disparity exists between the information a buyer needs to make a sound judgment, and the information the seller provides. As a result, trust between entities on the internet is significantly lower than in traditional commerce. The key to solving this problem is transparency. A system is needed where information is made public, and business credibility is made clear.

Anxiety Disorder-Several Conditions That ... - Flirting With Fitness

The term 'anxiety disorder' actually applies to several conditions that make people feel anxious on a frequent basis. Some of the more common anxiety disorders include panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), separation anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), various phobias, and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Here is a quick overview of each condition along with treatment options.

NOTE: You must always talk to a medical professional about any and all health concerns, including those related to anxiety.

Panic disorder is described as intense, brief incidents of hesitation or fear. Even though most people find the worst of it passes after ten to twenty minutes, sometimes the disorder escalates into a panic attack. A person with this anxiety disorder may believe they are having a heart attack or dying, and may seek emergency medical service (it's always better to err on the side of caution) for their symptoms.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is usually associated with people who do repeated actions or rituals that don't make apparent sense to an outside observer; for example, checking thirty times to see if the oven as bee turned off, frequent hand washing, or touching every telephone pole as they walk down the street. However, OCD also extends to a person's thoughts and can be manifested in other ways which connect a particular action with a desired result, even though the two aren't actually connected.

Separation anxiety occurs when the sufferer is separated from a place or person. A common example of this is when a toddler has a tantrum when their parents leave them with a babysitter. While this is fairly normal, it can become an issue if it is excessive in a child, or if it continues into adulthood.

Post-traumatic stress disorder is often associated with soldiers returning from combat, but can happen to anyone who has gone through a traumatic experience. The experience may be a one-time event or a prolonged series of events. Symptoms often include depression, anxiety, and reliving the events (flashbacks).

Phobias come in many different varieties and make up a large portion of all anxiety disorders. If you are afraid of something specific such as dogs, spiders, open spaces, social situations, clowns, snakes, water, or anything else for that matter, then you probably have a phobia. However, if you have a lower level of fear for just about everything, then you may have the following condition?

Generalized anxiety disorder is just what it sounds like: having an overall, general anxiety about all kinds of things. While most people get anxious about something at any given moment, somebody with GAD has a constant sense of anxiety about several things at the same time.

Each anxiety disorder has several treatment options available. Generally speaking, the treatment will involve learning coping mechanisms, medication, or both. Because everybody is different, it may take a bit of trial and error to find the most effective treatment for an individual. The good news is that effective treatment is possible.
